So here we are. It's April 4th and that means one thing; nope, not Easter Sunday, it's Opening Day!
I could talk about how well Jose Bautista has been playing this Spring, or how the Jays signed Adam Lind for absolutely nothing, but no I want to talk about John Buck's monster Spring!
This Spring John Buck didn't get much work. I think that's because Cito already knew what kind of quality catcher they were getting. So why tire him out? No need. In 2008 John Buck played 17 games, and in 2009 he played in 18 games before the regular season. This year he was active in 11 games. You know what that means; John Buck was already in mid-season form. No need for any more work. He's good.
So how did the Mormon Masher do in Spring Training? I am glad you asked because I was going to tell you anyway. Well like I said he only played in 11 games this Spring, so his 2 home runs and 4 RBI's aren't that impressive. Neither are his 4 runs scored nor his 0 walks. His .250 batting average isn't great either. Come to think of it his .250 OBP is just awful too.
Ok, so none of his stats this Spring were good. In fact they were all bad. But it's just Spring Training. The games mean absolutely nothing. Look at Jose Bautista, he had an amazing Spring. A .439 batting average, a .448 OBP, 5 home runs and 11 RBI's in 18 games. Does anyone actually think that Jose Bautista will play anywhere near that well during the regular season? Of course not.
So John Buck had a poor Spring and Jose Bautista had a great one. Who cares? None of it matters anyway.
Happy Opening Day everybody!
